Interim students create puppets with professor's help

Beginning Sunday, a record number of scholars will be flying to eight destinations around the world for this year’s Interim Term.

“We have 117 students studying abroad this term,” said Michele Raphoon in the Office of Global Engagement. “That beats the previous record of 114 set in 2017.”

Courses range from a study of the physical and metaphysical properties of Iceland to the music and tales of Ireland.

“We will have students in New Zealand, South Africa, the Cayman Islands, England, France, Spain and Morocco,” said Raphoon. “Everyone is very excited about the breadth of offerings we have this year.”

Some of the study-away classes will examine the cultures of Spain and Morocco, the treasures of La Belle France, nursing since Nightingale, business and tourism in the Cayman Islands and the people and customs of New Zealand.

Senior Samantha James is doing an international internship in Cape Town, South Africa, through Evolve Abroad, an organization based in England and South Africa that offers programs focusing on issues related to education.

“Sam will be participating in a program called ‘Teaching with a Focus on Education in the 21st Century.’  She’ll work with a mentor whose expertise is equality, diversity and inclusion in the classroom,” Raphoon said.

There also are out-of-the-ordinary classes being offered on campus during Interim Term. Some of those include “Puppetry Design, Construction and Performance;” “Game Shows, Popular Culture and Numbers;” “More than Just Pets;” “The Pop Culture South;” “Zen and the Art of Auto Maintenance;” and “Civil War: Cause, Conflict and Legacy.”

“We really encourage our students to step outside their comfort zones during Interim Term and try something new,” said Dr. Jon Ernstberger, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Director of General Education Online Instruction. “Want to learn about genealogy or 3D printing? We have courses on that.”

Since 2001, LaGrange College students have been exploring the world and expanding their horizons through Interim Term. In 2013, the college launched its Global Engagement Initiative and started offering travel vouchers to students who wanted to study away during Jan Term or May Away.

“We provide $2,500 travel vouchers to first-time, full-time students to be used their junior or senior years,” Raphoon said. “Every year, we have more students using their vouchers to study away.”
